Is There Such a Thing as 'Safe Drinking' During Pregnancy?

Some women in the United States are adopting the European attitude that it is all right to drink when you are pregnant, according to a report in the New York Post.

"The truth is, if you look at who is born with fetal alcohol syndrome, their mothers were alcoholics, and not one-drink-a-week women," said Dr. Randi Hutter Epstein, author of "Get Me Out: A History of Childbirth from the Garden of Eden to the Sperm Bank. "I feel strongly that all of our anti-alcohol messages are targeting the wrong women."

She and others believe that Americans may be going overboard by advising women not to drink at all, not to dye their hair, and not to consume soft cheeses or fish while they are pregnant -- all of which are condoned in other cultures.

Some research indicates that light drinking is reasonably safe -- but the official stance of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Genealogists is that no amount of alcohol consumption can be considered safe during pregnancy.

Americans have been so conditioned to believe that any alcohol during pregnancy is strictly forbidden. It makes it hard to believe that those standards can be relaxed a little. I do believe there's an obvious difference between a pregnant woman having half a glass of wine and going on a bender. My guess is most people can pick up on that, too.
